Medifast -- Diet Review

The Medifast diet is designed to produce rapid weight loss that will help you lose 2-5 lbs per week. This diet consists of eating 5 meal replacements per day, generally shakes but there are tons of other types of foods you can eat.

You eat every 2-3 hours and your caloric intake is limited to 800-100 calories per day. It is suggested you consult a physician before you undertake such a large cutback in calories per day.

During the 5 meal replacements you can have 1 meal that is "lean and green" that consists of a small portion of lean meat and around 2 cups of vegetables or a salad. Also, you need to make sure you drink 64oz of water per day.

The 5 and 1 Plan

So you're going to be eating 6 total meals. 5 are meal replacements including protein bars, soups, oatmeal and puddings and the other meal is your lean and green that we mentioned before. There are 70 pre-packaged foods that you can eat for your replacements, and the shakes are the most popular, but all of the items are optimized for vitamins and minerals to ensure you don't suffer any deficiences from not having the right diet.

Medifast Maintenance Plan

The great thing about Medifast is there are multiple phases and it's designed to help you lose weight and keep the weight off. After you have hit your desired weight during the 5 and 1 plan, you move to the Medifast maintenance plan. You start making a gradual transition back to normal food during a 16 day period. After this, Medifast recommends eating 1-3 Medifast meals per day and a moderately intense exercise routine (30-45 minutes per day, 5 days per week). This is what they advise to help keep the weight off and allow you to stay with the reduced weight.

Medifast Review

So is the Medifast a good diet plan? Medifast is one of the most popular diets, and it combines a balance of low-calorie diets and moderate exercise. There are tons of success stories from overweight people who have been able to drop their weight to manageable levels using the Medifast diet plan. And these same people had previously failed to lose weight under other yo-yo oriented diet plans.

This weight plan, however, is only designed to be used by the very overweight (Body Mass Index > 30), and it will only suit some people so if it doesn't fit, checkout some of the other diet plans available.

Medifast Update

For those of you trying to keep the pounds off in time for Summer, I have some great news for you! The Medifast meals are really, really good. I've been on the diet for about 2 months, and am starting to go back to regular food, and am not having the cravings I used to have. Typically on a diet, I can't wait to get back to my normal eats, but these Medifast meals don't make me feel like I'm missing anything. So if you're worried about getting back into the same yo-yo dieting pattern, it didn't happen to me, so good luck!
